The Last Day

Sunday 18th Jun
The Perfect Match challenge has run its course and I can not say I am sorry today is the last day. To say the challenge has not been challenging is a gross understatement.
22 km sounds like a reasonable distance in 7 days but there have been some additional obstacles, like recovering from major surgery in the lead up (I am four weeks out from the operation). I elected to double the kilometres set in the challenge from 22 to 44 km. It sounded like a good idea at the time!
So as I went on I started to feel the pain. What kept me going was realising that my discomfort pales into complete insignificance when you think about the ordeal men and their families with Prostate Cancer go through.
This is what keeps me going. Knowing that the money raised will go towards life saving research and help many men and their families not having to have their son, husband, brother, uncle have their lives cut short.
People like Michael Dixon McKellar who died way too young at 49 years of age.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to my campaign. You are all champions.

An Unexpected Donation from Icon Cancer Centre

Saturday 17th Jun
This morning we enter Day 6 of the Challenge. I am letting all my Sponsors know that Icon Cancer Centre donated $1000 to my page for the PCFA Perfect Match Challenge.
This means such a lot to me knowing this money is going towards Research that will save lives. More on this tonight. Because now I have to go and pump out an 8 km walk today, and another 8 km walk tomorrow to meet my goal of reaching double the original challenge target of 22 km or 44 km by close of play tomorrow.
Wish me luck.
And dig deep. Donate what you can. Remember whatever you donate will be doubled by our corporate sponsors.

Today is Day 5

Friday 16th Jun
At least the hurricane winds abated somewhat today and it was quite pleasant walking in both directions on my course around the city. You may wonder why the photo of the Wollongong Headland Lighthouse features in my Gallery. That is because it is one of the Wollongong Landmarks that appears along my course around the Harbour and the City. Others include WIN Stadium, the Entertainment Centre, many Restaurants, bars, coffee establishments and so on. It is certainly not a boring walk by any stretch of the imagination.
Yesterday (day 4) I cranked out about 7 km in total over 2 x walks of about 3.5 km. Today I did around 3.5 km. This is a dedicated walk for the cause but if I look at my total km for the day it is 7.2 km, meaning I walked as far incidentally as I did for the cause.
Let's see what tomorrow brings.

Third Day Already

Wednesday 14th Jun
So I didn't post to the blog yesterday. After putting out 6 km the first day my legs felt like they were made of lead. Muscles I didn't know I had were sore. So I thought I would take it easy and only did a 3 km walk.
Today I was determined to hit my target of a daily 6 km walk, despite the wind howling through Wollongong at 40 km/h. This made 6 km quite a challenge. So I listened to my Coach, Carol, and decided to do it in two parts each 3 km. I set out this morning completing the first leg just before lunch.
The second leg started at 5.00 pm and I completed this section at around 6 pm. The temperature was 14.5 C and with the wind at 40 k/h I reckon the temperature felt closer to 8 C than 14 C.
Let's see what tomorrow brings.
By the way I need some more Donations! Thanks folks.

First Day of Challenge

Monday 12th Jun
Today is the first Official Day of the Perfect Match Challenge. Sorry there was no Post yesterday - busy day attending Jamberoo Soccer Club Womens Over 30's game in Jamberoo. Known as the Jamberoo Ravens the team are a very cohesive outfit and many of them have been playing together for a number of years. Yesterday we awarded for the first time the new Michael McKellar Memorial Perpetual Trophy for the Player of the Match. The idea is the winning player keeps the Trophy for a week and returns it for the next Presentation.
The photos show Vanessa, Michael's sister, holding the Trophy and a close up of the Trophy.
As for today's Blog, as the first serious challenge day, I set out to achieve 6 km distance.
It was quite a challenge given my complete lack of fitness, but I think I made it in the end. Check out the Fitbit report for confirmation.

Building up to a running start (figuratively speaking)

Saturday 10th Jun
I fully intended to do some building up to the start by going for some short walks to get into "fit" mode for the Challenge. But as it has turned out the build up is only mental. But that is important too.
If I am not mentally ready then I will not be able to manage the physical task of walking 6 km per day. And I am determined to meet that challenge no matter what.
Now my Fitbit is connected to this page there is no hiding from the truth of distance!

Getting closer to the Start

Friday 9th Jun
One night's sleep already gone, so only 3 to go now. Spent the day resurrecting my Fitbit which hasn't had any use for two years. Got it sorted out and synched with my phone. Even managed to link it to the PCFA Perfect Match website, so we are in good shape on that side of things.
Let's talk about fitness for a minute. I am just four weeks post some major surgery and still recovering. Although recovering well I have to be careful not to stretch myself too far. I really need another two weeks - but I only have 3 days. Oh, well.

Only 4 sleeps until the start of the Perfect Match Challenge

Thursday 8th Jun
Not long now until the start of the walk to raise Funds for Prostate Cancer Research. I will have to cover 22 km between 12th and 18th June. So I plan to do 6 km per day for a total of 42 km over the week. So someone said that is equivalent to a Marathon. Not sure if that's true, but I will give it my best shot. Because it is important.
