It’s been a hell of a few weeks. Given my family history I have been getting a PSA check every 12 months for many years. I had an elevated result last year and was sent for an MRI which came back fine.

This year my PSA was higher again so I went in for a prostate biopsy. The pathology result came back confirming that yes I do have prostate cancer. That was a shock. However positive news in that it is low grade cancer and a subsequent PET scan confirmed that is localised to the prostate.

The plan for me moving forward is active surveillance where I will be getting more regular PSA tests and a biopsy or imaging every 12 months. This way we aim to put off any radical procedures for as long as possible and who knows maybe forever.

I had always assumed I was going to get it given the family history, I just figured it wouldn’t be for at least another 15 years. Emotions have been a bit all over the place the last few weeks but I’m thankful that I have been proactive and we have caught it early.

I was debating telling people however have made the call to get the news out there given it’s men’s health week and to champion everyone getting regular checkups and to know your family history.

Yesterday I took a day of work, at my company we can use a couple of days each year of our sick leave for well-being days. A mate and I headed to the scenic rim Sunday where the swags were rolled out around the camp fire. We then hiked up Mount Greville through Waterfall and Palm Gorges. The perfect place and activity to reset my mind after these eventful weeks.
